Internet for Umrah: eSIM, SIM Cards and Data Planning
Compare an Umrah eSIM, a Saudi SIM card and roaming. Plan your data, check local-number needs, and prepare your phone before Makkah and Madinah.

In this article
You can use an eSIM for Umrah if your phone supports it, is unlocked and the plan covers Saudi Arabia. A travel eSIM is useful for mobile data; a Saudi SIM may suit you better if you need a local number. Your home operator’s roaming package is a third option. The right choice depends on your phone, trip length and need for calls or SMS—not just the advertised price.
eSIM, Saudi SIM or roaming: which should you choose?
Choose the connection around the tasks you need during the journey: mobile data, a Saudi number, or keeping your home line available. Here is a practical comparison.
| Option | Useful for | Calls and SMS | Before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | Arranging mobile data before departure | Data-only plans have no Saudi number or ordinary calls/SMS | Confirm eSIM support, carrier unlock, network and activation timing |
| Saudi SIM or local eSIM | Travellers who need a local number | Choose a visitor package that explicitly includes the services you need | Check identification requirements, price and where to obtain it |
| Home-operator roaming | Using an existing line with a suitable travel bundle | Depends on the home operator’s bundle | Check Saudi coverage, total cost, allowance and overage charges |
A pilgrimage roaming bundle may be competitive, so compare the total cost for the whole trip. If mobile data is your main need, use eSIMfo’s Saudi Arabia data plans as the starting point for the travel-eSIM comparison.
How much data do you need for Umrah?
Start with your phone’s actual mobile-data usage. Messaging and occasional maps usually use less than video calls, streaming or cloud photo backups. Download useful maps and files on Wi-Fi, then estimate the mobile data you will still use each day.
For an “unlimited” package, read any daily high-speed allowance, fair-use limit, reduced speed and hotspot conditions before buying. Check your remaining data after the first day and adjust your usage before it runs out.
Umrah eSIM plan examples: data, validity and price
These three data-only options are listed on eSIMfo’s Saudi Arabia page. They have the same 30-day validity but different allowances; choose by expected usage, then check when validity starts.
| Data | Validity | Price in EUR | When to compare it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 GB | 30 days | €5.25 | When your calculated trip usage fits within 3 GB |
| 5 GB | 30 days | €8.10 | When a 3 GB estimate needs extra headroom |
| 10 GB | 30 days | €16.20 | When you expect more uploads, video calls or hotspot use |
Prices checked on 10 September 2026 in EUR. These examples list Zain as the network, with 4G/5G availability depending on device and local conditions. Prices and package terms can change; open eSIMfo’s Saudi Arabia data plans to confirm the selected package and checkout total.
Do you need a Saudi number for calls, SMS or Nusuk?
A data-only travel eSIM supplies internet access, not a Saudi number or ordinary calls and SMS. Complete the Nusuk registration and any required permit steps separately before departure. Check which number is registered to your account and how you will receive verification messages.
You may keep your home line enabled for verification messages on a supported dual-SIM phone, but check your home operator’s roaming charges and SMS availability. Internet messaging uses data; ordinary phone calls and SMS use the relevant line. Calling-app availability can vary with the service and network.
Set up the phone before travel
Check your exact phone before paying
Check both eSIM support and carrier unlock. Two phones with the same product name can differ by sales region. The menu paths below help you check the device you will actually take.
- iPhone: Open Settings → General → About and check Carrier Lock. An unlocked device shows “No SIM restrictions”. Look for Add eSIM under Cellular or Mobile Data.
- Samsung Galaxy: Look under Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM. Availability depends on the exact model, region and software.
- Google Pixel: Look under Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → Set up an eSIM. Confirm support for your exact model and carrier.
If the option is missing, ask the manufacturer or your carrier to verify the model before purchasing. Menu wording varies with language and software. For illustrated steps, use Apple’s official guide, Samsung’s official guide and Google’s Pixel guide.
- Read when the package starts: installation, activation or first connection may have different meanings.
- Install using reliable Wi-Fi when the provider’s instructions allow it. Keep the setup instructions accessible.
- Label the lines clearly, such as “Home” and “Saudi data”. At the destination, select the travel line for mobile data.
- Turn off data roaming on the home line if you do not intend to use it. Enable roaming on the travel line only as instructed, and review automatic data switching.

Make a contact plan for Makkah and Madinah
Save your hotel address in Arabic, the group leader’s number and a meeting point offline; carry a paper copy for anyone who needs one. Practise opening the address and sending a message before leaving home. A shared hotspot can help when people stay together, but it stops helping when the group separates. Each person should know the fallback plan.
Around busy sites, inside hotels and while moving between locations, signal and speed can vary. Save essential addresses offline and agree a meeting point in advance. Offline copies help with reference; use valid documents and live permits wherever required.
If your Umrah eSIM has no internet
Check the selected data line, remaining allowance, validity and the provider’s roaming or APN instructions. Try airplane mode briefly or restart the phone. Do not delete the eSIM as a first troubleshooting step: reinstalling may require the provider’s help. On Wi-Fi, contact support with your device model and the error shown.
Frequently asked questions about internet for Umrah
Will a seven-day plan cover a ten-day trip?
Not for the full ten days if its validity starts on day one. Remaining gigabytes do not extend the expiry date. Choose validity that covers the journey, including arrival and departure days.
Can my family share one eSIM?
A hotspot can share data when the phone and plan allow it. Everyone must remain near the connected phone, and all usage comes from its allowance. If family members will separate, plan an independent connection for each person who needs one.
Can I rely only on hotel Wi-Fi?
Hotel Wi-Fi may cover your needs while you are there, but it does not provide mobile internet on transfers or away from the hotel. Download maps in advance and decide how you will contact the group outside Wi-Fi coverage.
Should I install the eSIM before the flight?
Install it on reliable Wi-Fi when the provider’s instructions allow. Check whether validity begins at installation, activation or first connection in Saudi Arabia, so that you do not start the package earlier than intended.
Choose a package after these checks
