Hajj is the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah and nearby holy sites in Saudi Arabia. It is one of Islam’s five pillars and is an obligation once in a lifetime for adult Muslims who are physically and financially able. Its main days fall in Dhul-Hijjah, and its rites include Arafat, Muzdalifah and Mina as well as worship at the Kaaba.

What does Hajj mean?
Hajj is an act of worship associated with devotion, repentance and the unity of Muslims gathered for the same purpose. Its meaning goes beyond visiting a destination. Madinah may be included in a travel package, but visiting it is not a Hajj rite. Check your itinerary so you understand which stops are pilgrimage rites and which are additional visits.
When is Hajj, and how long does it take?
The main Hajj days run from the 8th to the 12th or 13th of Dhul-Hijjah, depending on the programme and departure from Mina. The Gregorian dates change each year. Use the official announcement for the relevant season rather than copying a previous year’s dates.
The complete trip is longer than the main ritual days because it includes flights, transfers and accommodation. How is Hajj different from Umrah?
Hajj has a fixed annual period and rites at Arafat, Muzdalifah and Mina. Umrah has fewer stages and can be arranged across much of the year subject to current seasonal rules. Before booking: check permissions and the package
Confirm the official booking route for your nationality and residence, the required Hajj authorization and the provider’s status. Check Nusuk Hajj, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and the applicable authorized channel in your country.
- Confirm which hotels, transfers, camp arrangements and services are included.
- Ask how meeting points and movement instructions will be shared.
- Check current entry requirements, cancellation terms and what happens if flight times change.
- Keep booking references and the organizer’s contact available before paying for separate additions.
A practical Hajj preparation checklist
Keep passport and visa details, required permits, booking references and return-flight information accessible. Pack the appropriate ihram and everyday clothing, footwear for each stage, a small bag, charger and suitable adapter. Check airline rules for any power bank you intend to carry.
Plan rest and ask the organizer about walking distances and assistance arrangements that your group needs. Do not assume every transfer or entrance is next to the hotel. A precise meeting point is more useful than a vague instruction such as “outside the mosque”.
Make a group contact plan for each move
- Before leaving: confirm the destination, meeting point, group leader’s number and agreed departure time.
- On your phone and on paper: keep the hotel or camp details and the organizer’s contact. Practise opening them before the journey.
- If separated: follow the group’s agreed procedure and local staff’s instructions. Do not depend solely on live location sharing or a shared hotspot.

What should a family contact card contain?
Prepare one card per traveller with the organizer’s name and number, the hotel or camp name, and the meeting point. The hotel in Makkah and camp in Mina serve different stages: update the card before moving. Give a second person a copy so one empty phone battery does not disrupt the plan. Before leaving home, ask everyone to find these details once.

Can I perform Hajj with an Umrah visa?
Not on that visa alone. Confirm the specific Hajj authorization through the official route.
Can I follow the same route and timing as another group?
Follow your own organizer’s assigned arrangements and official movement instructions; a general online itinerary does not replace them.
What is the most useful digital preparation?
Make your documents, meeting points and contact details easy to find, and practise the phone tasks your group will actually use. Connectivity works best as one part of a prepared journey.
Is visiting Madinah required to complete Hajj?
Madinah is important to many pilgrims, but visiting it is not a Hajj rite. Check whether it is included in your package and allow for its separate transfers.
Does a shorter Hajj package mean fewer rites?
No. Package length includes accommodation, flights and additional visits. Required rites depend on the form of Hajj and your circumstances. Ask the organizer to explain both the religious programme and the travel timetable.
