Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage to the Kaaba in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Its main stages are entering ihram, performing tawaf around the Kaaba, completing sa’i between Safa and Marwah, and shaving or trimming the hair as appropriate. It is distinct from Hajj, which has specific annual dates and additional rites.

What does Umrah mean?
Umrah is an act of worship associated with devotion, prayer and spiritual renewal. It takes place in Makkah; visiting Madinah can be part of the travel itinerary, but is not one of the rites of Umrah. The word “ihram” refers to a sacred state entered with intention, not merely the garments associated with it.
What is the difference between Umrah and Hajj?

The four main stages of Umrah
- Ihram: prepare for entering the sacred state at the appropriate miqat for your route, with the intention for Umrah. If flying, ask your organizer about this before the flight.
- Tawaf: perform seven circuits around the Kaaba. Follow the designated flow and your guide’s instructions.
- Sa’i: complete seven one-way passages between Safa and Marwah, starting at Safa and ending at Marwah. A return trip counts as two passages, not one.
- Shaving or trimming: complete the hair rite appropriate to you, following religious guidance, to finish Umrah.

Before booking: confirm the journey is possible
Check the visa route available for your nationality and residence, the applicable season dates, accommodation and transfers. Review current booking and permit requirements on Nusuk Umrah and with your authorized organizer. Do not treat a previous year’s departure notice as the timetable for a new trip.
Choose a schedule with time for rest and for getting between your hotel, transport and the mosque. A hotel described as “near the Haram” may still involve a different walking route from the one you expect; ask for the actual entrance and meeting point.
First-Umrah packing and document checklist
- Passport, visa details, required booking or permit information and return-travel reference.
- Appropriate ihram clothing and everyday clothing, as advised for your journey.
- Footwear appropriate to each stage, a small bag for belongings and essential personal items.
- Phone charger, compatible plug adapter and a power bank permitted by your airline.
- Hotel address in Arabic, group contact and a meeting point, saved offline and on paper if helpful.
Ask the organizer which items the package already includes. Keep important documents accessible during transfers instead of burying everything in checked luggage.
Plan the first hour after arrival
Before leaving the airport, know where your confirmed transfer meets you and how to contact it. Check your hotel name and address rather than relying on a photo alone. If travelling with relatives, agree on who holds the booking details and what everyone should do if separated.

How can a family rehearse the journey before departure?
Try a ten-minute practice at home. One traveller opens the hotel address, another finds the transfer contact, and each person shows where the return-flight details are saved. Then repeat with mobile data switched off. This reveals missing information before you need it at the airport. Keep the hotel name in Arabic and a clear meeting point on a small card; a photo of a large entrance may be difficult to identify in a crowd.

Common first-visit questions
How long does Umrah take?
The rites and the whole trip are different durations. Crowds, walking pace, rest and transfers affect the time, so leave a buffer instead of planning around a guaranteed finish time.
Can I organize Umrah independently?
Available booking routes depend on your eligibility and current rules. Confirm the official requirements before paying for individual travel components.
Do I need continuous internet for worship?
Internet can help with travel communication and accessing services, but it does not replace knowing the rites. Save useful information offline and keep required official documents or live permits available in the form requested.
Is visiting Madinah part of Umrah?
Visiting Madinah is a separate part of many itineraries, not one of Umrah’s four main rites. If you visit Madinah first, confirm the miqat arrangements for your onward journey to Makkah with your guide.
Does everyone in a family need an eSIM?
