Vietnam Travel Apps: Grab, Maps & Getting Online
Prepare the apps you actually need in Vietnam: Grab airport pickups, offline maps, translation, bookings, SMS verification and the right mobile data plan.

In this article
Your first useful travel app in Vietnam is often the one that gets you from the airport to the right hotel entrance. The aim is not to fill your phone with downloads: set up transport, maps, translation and reservations before departure, then make sure they work away from hotel Wi-Fi. This guide focuses on those practical tasks. For destinations and a longer itinerary, use our Vietnam travel and route guide.
Which apps are worth preparing before Vietnam?
| Need | Useful tool | Prepare before departure |
|---|---|---|
| City transport | Grab | Create your account, check the registered number and review payment options. |
| Places and navigation | Google Maps | Save hotel entrances and download available areas; offline walking directions are not supported. |
| Menus and short conversations | Google Translate | Download supported language packs and test them in airplane mode. |
| Flights and accommodation | Your airline and booking apps | Save booking references and accessible offline copies. |
| Messages with local contacts | An agreed messaging app; Zalo if requested | Ask the hotel or tour operator what it uses; do not assume a new local account is essential. |
Set up accounts before your flight
Download apps from their official stores and complete sign-in while you can still receive messages on the number registered to each account. Check the country code and recovery method. An account you already use is usually more useful than one you create while tired at arrivals. Keep hotel names and addresses in Vietnamese as well as your preferred language; similar hotel names can point to different streets.
A data-only Vietnam eSIM supplies internet, not a Vietnamese telephone number or a replacement inbox for bank and app verification codes. If a service sends an SMS to your home number, you still need access to that number. Check your home operator’s conditions, and turn off its data roaming if you do not intend to use it. Do not delete an existing account simply because a code is delayed.
Using Grab at Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City airport
Grab lists options including GrabCar, GrabTaxi, JustGrab and GrabBike, but availability depends on location and time. Choose the service that fits your passengers and luggage; a motorbike is not a substitute for a family airport car. Confirm the destination, displayed fare and payment method before booking, then match the driver and vehicle details in the app before boarding.
Airport pickup points change by terminal. At Hanoi Nội Bài, Grab updated its pickup instructions in August 2026; Ho Chi Minh City’s Tân Sơn Nhất also has terminal-specific guidance. Follow the current map and photographs in your booking rather than an old blog’s gate number. Send a clear landmark through the app, keep data available while waiting and do not get into an unrelated vehicle because someone calls it a Grab. If the app cannot confirm a ride, use the airport’s official transport information or a prearranged hotel transfer.
Google Maps offline: what works and what does not
Save your hotel entrance, an airport meeting point, a nearby landmark and the places you plan to visit. Download the relevant map area over Wi-Fi where the feature is available, and open it once before departure. In Hội An, for example, a saved hotel pin and a screenshot of the last streets are more useful than remembering only the property’s English name.
Google’s offline maps do not provide walking, cycling or public transport directions, and live traffic information needs a connection. Offline driving guidance requires the whole route to be inside the downloaded area. Keep mobile data for live navigation and last-minute changes, and treat downloaded maps as a backup rather than a complete replacement.

Translation and reservations without a connection
Google Translate lets you download supported languages. If there is no download icon for a language, offline download is not available for that selection. Test the exact languages and features on your phone; do not assume voice, camera and live conversation all work offline in the same way. Save a few practical phrases and your accommodation address as text.
Keep flight and hotel references, check-in instructions and tour meeting details in a place you can open without signing in again. Save a PDF or screenshot where the provider accepts it; some tickets require a live app or changing code. On a boat excursion or a rural transfer, offline reservations are a useful fallback. Do not post passports, payment details or complete booking codes in a public messaging group.

A simple arrival sequence
Before leaving the terminal: connect, confirm that a webpage loads, open the hotel address and check your transport booking. Select the travel eSIM for mobile data and follow its package-specific roaming and activation instructions. Keep your home line available only as needed for calls or verification. If automatic data switching could use your home plan, review that setting before travelling.
If something fails, separate the problem. An app that loads but cannot send an SMS code is not necessarily a data failure. Recheck the registered number and country code before requesting another code. A rejected card needs a payment alternative offered by the service, not another eSIM. For no connection, verify the selected data line, remaining allowance and package instructions, then contact support with a screenshot excluding private information.
How much mobile data do these apps need?
There is no fixed allowance per app: map use, photo uploads, video and hotspot sharing change consumption. A planning example of 300 MB a day over ten days is about 3 GB; 700 MB a day is about 7 GB. Download large maps and updates on Wi-Fi and check actual usage after the first day. Leave a buffer instead of buying to the last megabyte.
| Example package | Validity | Price checked 31 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 3 GB | 30 days | €5.90 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | €8.80 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | €14.70 |
These examples are from eSIMfo Vietnam plans, not an automatically updated price feed. The checked data plans list VNPT and are data-only; they do not provide a local voice/SMS number. eSIMfo supports hotspot sharing. Confirm phone compatibility, network coverage, activation timing and the price shown at checkout. A regional package needs a country-by-country coverage check if you continue beyond Vietnam.
Vietnam apps and internet: frequently asked questions
Does Grab work in Vietnam?
Grab operates transport services in Vietnam, with options varying by city and availability. Check the service, pickup point and price in the app for your actual journey.
Do I need a Vietnamese phone number to use every travel app?
Not every app requires a local number. Requirements vary by service and account. Complete verification before departure where possible and retain access to the number already registered.
Can I use Google Maps offline to walk around Vietnam?
You can save places and download available areas, but Google Maps does not offer offline walking directions. Use a live connection for walking routes and keep a saved address as backup.
Can a data eSIM receive Grab or bank SMS codes?
A data-only eSIM does not receive SMS sent to your other number. Keep access to the number registered with the app or bank; purchasing mobile data does not transfer that number.
Should I install Zalo before Vietnam?
It can be useful if your hotel, guide or local contact uses it. Ask first; it is not a universal requirement for visitors, and registration conditions should be checked in the app.
Is 3 GB enough for ten days in Vietnam?
It can fit a light-use plan averaging about 300 MB daily, but it is not a usage guarantee. Video, frequent uploads and hotspot use can require substantially more data.
