Vietnam eSIM & Travel Guide 2026: Routes and Tips
Plan 7–14 days in Vietnam: Hanoi, Ha Long, Hoi An and Phu Quoc. Compare eSIM prices, mobile data, transport and the best season for your route.

In this article
Vietnam can mean a coffee beside Hanoi’s Old Quarter, limestone islands in Ha Long Bay, lantern-lit streets in Hoi An or a quiet beach morning on Phu Quoc. You do not need to fit all of them into one holiday. Choose your route around the number of nights you have and the weather in each region, then prepare transport and mobile internet before arrival.
For one week, focus on one region or two well-connected bases. With two weeks, combine north and central Vietnam, or add the south with a flight. A Vietnam eSIM is useful for maps, bookings and messages if your existing mobile plan does not include enough affordable roaming data.
Travel information and prices checked on 7 October 2026. This guide is published by eSIMfo, which sells the mobile data plans discussed below.
Where should you go on a first trip to Vietnam?
Hanoi and Ha Long Bay: city life and limestone scenery
Give Hanoi time beyond a quick airport stop: walk around Hoan Kiem Lake, explore the Old Quarter and leave space for a meal without a timetable. Combine the city with a Ha Long Bay excursion or overnight cruise. Before booking a boat, compare the departure port, transfers, route and cancellation terms. Keep a flexible day when a cruise is central to your trip; weather can change sailings.

Hoi An and Da Nang: old streets and a coastal base
Use Da Nang as the air gateway to Hoi An. The old town suits slow walks, café stops and an evening among the lanterns; nearby countryside and An Bang Beach add variety. Group nearby outings instead of returning to the airport area every day. Hoi An is particularly attractive in March–May, while October–January can bring rain and storms, so choose accommodation and activities with a wet-weather alternative.

Ho Chi Minh City: a different urban rhythm
Choose accommodation by the places you actually want to visit, not just its distance from the airport. Plan a compact city day around museums, markets and food, then consider a separate Mekong Delta excursion if time allows. A map pin and the hotel’s address in Vietnamese make pickup easier. Leave a generous transfer buffer before an onward flight.
Phu Quoc: finish with beach time
Phu Quoc works best as a deliberate beach stop rather than a rushed extra flight. Choose which coast you want to stay on, then check transfer times from the airport and access to meals outside your hotel. Kem Beach and the island’s other beaches offer different settings; photographs show the destination, not guaranteed conditions on your travel dates. Check the seasonal forecast before paying for boat trips.

Vietnam in 7, 10 or 14 days: choose a realistic route
These are suggested itineraries, not packaged tours. Count arrival and departure days as travel days and keep at least one flexible afternoon.
| Time available | Suggested route | Make it work |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | Hanoi + Ha Long Bay, with time for a nearby day trip | Stay mainly in the north; avoid adding three domestic flights. |
| 10 days | Hanoi and Ha Long, then Da Nang / Hoi An | Allow a transfer day between regions and check central-coast weather. |
| 14 days | North + central Vietnam, then Ho Chi Minh City OR Phu Quoc | Pick a city finish or a beach finish; you do not have to do both. |
When is the best time to visit Vietnam?
Vietnam has different regional seasons. Hanoi is often pleasant in September–November; Ha Long Bay is commonly recommended for April–June or September–November. Central Vietnam needs a separate weather check, especially around the wetter autumn months. The south is generally drier from December to April. Select your destinations first and check the forecast shortly before departure: there is no single month with identical conditions across the country.

Transport, apps and small preparations that save time
Compare flights with the full door-to-door journey, including airport transfers. Trains can suit part of a route, but do not treat Hanoi–Ho Chi Minh City as a short transfer. In major cities, a metered taxi or a ride booked through an app such as Grab can simplify local travel. Set up your account before departure, confirm how it verifies your number and keep a way to receive any required SMS: a data-only eSIM does not supply a new phone number. Save hotel addresses, tickets and useful map areas offline. Check entry requirements for your own passport on Vietnam’s official immigration portal; do not assume every traveller has the same visa exemption.

Vietnam eSIM, local SIM or roaming: which should you choose?
Start with your home plan’s Vietnam allowance. If the included data is sufficient, another SIM may be unnecessary. Otherwise compare the total cost, usable data and setup effort rather than choosing only by the lowest headline price.
| Option | A good fit when | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Your existing roaming plan | Vietnam is included with enough data | Daily fees, data limits and what happens after the allowance. |
| Travel eSIM | You want to prepare mobile data before landing | Exact device compatibility, network, validity and hotspot support. |
| Local SIM or local eSIM | You need local voice service or a particular operator | Whether a Vietnamese number, registration and calls are included. |
Vietnam eSIM prices: practical eSIMfo examples
The current Vietnam catalogue lists VNPT plans, including fixed-data and unlimited options. These fixed-data packages all have 30-day validity, so they can also suit shorter holidays. Choose the allowance for your actual use, not simply the number of nights.
| Data | Validity | Price in EUR | Example use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 GB | 30 days | €5.90 | Maps and messaging, with regular Wi-Fi |
| 5 GB | 30 days | €8.80 | Navigation, browsing and moderate photo sharing |
| 10 GB | 30 days | €14.70 | More uploads or occasional hotspot use |
Checked on 7 October 2026: 3 GB / 30 days €5.90; 5 GB / 30 days €8.80; 10 GB / 30 days €14.70. Prices and availability can change; check the current package before purchase.
The inspected 5 GB package is data-only, lists VNPT with 5G support, and includes hotspot and top-up features. It does not provide a Vietnamese voice number. Actual speed and reception depend on your device and location; save offline maps for remote stretches and boat trips. Unlimited packages are also available, but compare their high-speed, fair-use and hotspot conditions separately from these fixed-data examples.

How many GB do you need for Vietnam?
Use your phone’s recent data history as a starting point. For a 10-day trip, a budget of 300 MB per day is about 3 GB; 700 MB per day is about 7 GB. These are planning calculations, not fixed consumption promises for apps. Video streaming, cloud backup and laptop sharing can use much more. Download large files on Wi-Fi and check your balance after the first two days, while there is still time to adjust.
Set up your Vietnam connection before you fly
- Check your exact phone model and regional version support eSIM, and that the device is carrier-unlocked.
- Install on reliable Wi-Fi before travel and follow the package instructions. eSIMfo’s Vietnam guidance recommends activating on arrival.
- In Vietnam, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and enable its data roaming if instructed. Disable data roaming and automatic data switching on your home line to avoid unintended data use.
- Keep your usual WhatsApp account, test mobile internet and save the first hotel’s address offline. A working data connection does not replace SMS or voice service on your home number.

Vietnam eSIM and travel: frequently asked questions
Which is the best eSIM for Vietnam?
The best fit depends on your route, data use and phone. Compare the listed network, validity, total price, hotspot support and whether you need a local number. eSIMfo’s inspected Vietnam plan uses VNPT and supplies mobile data; it is not a local voice SIM.
Can I buy an unlimited Vietnam eSIM?
Yes, the eSIMfo Vietnam catalogue includes unlimited options. Check the selected package’s high-speed allowance, any fair-use slowdown and hotspot conditions. The word unlimited alone does not establish unlimited full-speed tethering.
Is there a Vietnam eSIM valid for 30 days?
Yes. The listed 3 GB, 5 GB and 10 GB examples each have 30-day validity. That is the validity window, not a promise that a given allowance will last a month for every user.
Is 5 GB enough for 10 days in Vietnam?
It can cover moderate maps, messages and browsing with regular Wi-Fi. At an average of 500 MB a day, ten days uses about 5 GB. Frequent video or hotspot use calls for a larger allowance.
Can I use WhatsApp and travel apps with a data eSIM?
A data eSIM supplies internet for apps while your existing WhatsApp account can keep its registered number. Set up travel apps before departure; any SMS verification still needs access to the number registered with that app.
Will a Vietnam eSIM work in Thailand or Cambodia too?
Only if those countries are explicitly included. The inspected Vietnam package covers Vietnam. For a multi-country itinerary, compare the destination list of a regional plan or buy separate country packages.
When should I activate my Vietnam eSIM?
Install it before travel using Wi-Fi and follow the purchased plan’s instructions. eSIMfo’s Vietnam guidance recommends activation on arrival so that validity is used during the trip.
Should I buy an eSIM or a SIM card at the airport?
Choose an eSIM if your unlocked phone supports it and you want data prepared in advance. An airport or local shop can be useful for a physical SIM or local voice number; check registration, inclusions and price before buying.
