Prague’s Christmas trip works best when you leave room between the landmarks: a morning by Charles Bridge, a warm café break and a market after dusk. This guide is for a short city break, with a route you can follow without crossing the city repeatedly. The main Old Town and Wenceslas Square markets run from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027; smaller markets have different dates.

When are Prague’s Christmas markets in 2026?

Prague City Tourism lists the dates below. Match your booking to the specific market you want to visit, especially for late November or after Christmas. Dates and prices were checked on 31 October 2026; check the official programme again before departure.

Market2026–27 datesHow to fit it into your trip
Old Town Square28 Nov 2026 – 6 Jan 2027The classic first evening, beside the Astronomical Clock and Týn Church.
Wenceslas Square28 Nov 2026 – 6 Jan 2027Combine with New Town and your walk back towards the centre.
Náměstí Míru20 Nov – 24 Dec 2026A neighbourhood stop in Vinohrady; useful for an earlier November visit.
Náměstí Republiky25 Nov – 24 Dec 2026Pair with the Municipal House area and nearby shopping streets.

Not every market stays open into January. Daily opening hours and holiday arrangements also differ. The calendar describes the named markets, not every stall, concert or attraction in Prague.

A relaxed three-day Prague itinerary

Day 1: Old Town, riverside and the first market

Start around Old Town Square in daylight so you can locate the Astronomical Clock and the streets you will use later. Walk towards the river, stop for lunch indoors and return to the square as the lights come on. Finish at Wenceslas Square only if you still have energy; two markets are enough for the first day. Save your hotel entrance and a meeting point on the map before the evening crowds.

Day 2: Charles Bridge, Malá Strana and the castle area

Cross Charles Bridge in the morning, explore Malá Strana and continue towards Prague Castle. Allow extra time for slopes, steps and any attractions you choose to enter. Keep a warm indoor stop in the middle of the day instead of scheduling a long uninterrupted walk. Return across the river before your evening meal. A short tram ride is often a better finish than adding another tired walk.

Day 3: Vinohrady and a slower final morning

Before 24 December, make Náměstí Míru your neighbourhood market stop and explore nearby cafés. Alternatively, choose Náměstí Republiky and the Municipal House area. After those markets close, replace them with a museum or another Old Town visit. On departure day, keep luggage collection and the airport journey separate from the sightseeing plan; this itinerary assumes three usable days, not three calendar dates with two flights.

Where to stay and how to avoid a rushed trip

Old Town is convenient for walking back after an evening market, but check noise reviews as carefully as distance. New Town suits a central base near transport. Vinohrady can work well if you prefer a neighbourhood feel and accept a metro or tram journey. Compare the actual walking route from the stop to the hotel, luggage storage and cancellation terms. With children or limited mobility, a shorter route with a planned café break is more useful than a long list of landmarks.

Airport transfer and Prague transport costs

Prague Airport recommends trolleybus 59 to Nádraží Veleslavín, connecting to metro line A. Use the current journey planner for your hotel rather than following an old guide that still says bus 119. The Airport Express is a separate service and is not included in ordinary Prague public transport tickets.

30 minutes36 CZK39 CZK
90 minutes46 CZK50 CZK
24 hours140 CZK150 CZK
72 hours340 CZK350 CZK

These are the 2026 basic Prague fares in CZK, not a family quote. Check age-based discounts and luggage rules separately. A purchased app ticket must be activated and valid before you travel; allow the countdown shown in the app. Stamp a paper ticket where required. A 72-hour ticket is useful for repeated journeys, but walking most of the centre may make individual tickets cheaper.

Food, weather and a realistic daily budget

Do not budget from a single attractive stall price. Check whether a portion is priced by weight, what a drink includes and whether a cup deposit is added. Carry a small amount of Czech koruna as well as a card, and confirm the currency before paying. Plan a proper indoor meal and a warm break rather than eating every meal standing outside. Wear layers and shoes with grip; rain, cold and slippery paving are more useful planning assumptions than a guaranteed snowy Christmas. A power bank and saved reservations help when a long day out drains your phone.

Do you need a Prague eSIM for the trip?

First check whether your existing plan includes Czechia with enough roaming data. If it does, you may not need another package. Otherwise, eSIMfo Czech Republic plans can keep maps, messages and bookings available between Wi-Fi stops. The catalogue checked today includes 1 GB / 7 days for €2.55, 3 GB / 30 days for €3.25 and 5 GB / 30 days for €4.55. These are price examples, not a live price feed. Choose validity for the whole trip and data for your actual use.

eSIMfo supports hotspot sharing. A data package does not automatically include a Czech telephone number, and mobile networks can slow down in crowded squares. At 300 MB per day, three days is about 0.9 GB; video uploads and shared connections can use much more. Install using reliable Wi-Fi, follow the package’s activation instructions and keep your main line’s data roaming off if you do not intend to use it. For a trip continuing to Vienna or Berlin, check every destination in the regional package’s coverage list. Our European Christmas markets guide helps you compare the wider Christmas-market route.

Prague Christmas markets: frequently asked questions

When does Prague’s main Christmas market open in 2026?

The Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square markets open on 28 November 2026 and continue until 6 January 2027. Náměstí Míru starts earlier, on 20 November, and ends on 24 December.

Can I visit the markets after Christmas?

Yes, the two main markets continue into January. Náměstí Míru and Náměstí Republiky finish on 24 December, so do not build a post-Christmas itinerary around them.

Are three days enough for Prague at Christmas?

Three usable days cover Old Town, Charles Bridge, Malá Strana and a neighbourhood market at a comfortable pace. Add time if you want several museums or a day trip outside Prague.

Is the airport journey included in a Prague transport ticket?

The ordinary PID route using trolleybus 59 and metro A follows the standard transport tariff. Airport Express AE is separate. Choose a ticket valid for your complete journey and check current conditions.

Will a Czech Republic eSIM work in Prague?

A compatible, unlocked phone can use a package covering Czechia in Prague, subject to local coverage. Check validity, data allowance and activation instructions; a data eSIM is not automatically a voice or SMS plan.
