You can buy a travel eSIM directly from a specialist provider’s website or app, from a mobile operator, and through some airport retailers or travel partners. The useful question is which route gives you the right service for your journey. A low headline price is not much help if the package expires halfway through your trip, excludes a stopover or cannot be installed on your phone.

Start with your existing tariff. If it already includes enough suitable data at your destination, you may not need another plan. Otherwise, an online travel eSIM is a convenient way to arrange mobile internet before departure; a local operator may be a better fit when you need a local number or in-person assistance.

Checked on 8 October 2026. eSIMfo publishes this guide and sells travel eSIMs. The examples explain purchasing choices; they are not a claim that one seller is cheapest everywhere.

Buying online from an eSIM provider

A specialist website or app lets you choose a destination, data allowance and validity period without visiting a shop. Buy from the provider’s official site or its linked app-store listing, and read the exact package rather than relying on a search advertisement. Identify who takes payment, sends the installation instructions and handles support. If you use a marketplace with several suppliers, those responsibilities may differ by offer. eSIMfo lets you browse country, regional and global plans; compare the covered-country list against your actual itinerary.

Using your home operator: roaming is not a new eSIM

Changing a physical SIM into an eSIM does not automatically change your tariff. Keeping your existing line abroad generally means using its roaming conditions, with or without a travel pass. Some plans include international data: T-Mobile, for example, publishes destination and plan-specific travel benefits. Check the allowance in your own account. If it meets your needs, its incremental cost may be zero; if a daily pass is needed, calculate the total for all chargeable days.

Buying locally or at the airport

Local operators can sell visitor plans online, in shops or at airport counters; not every retailer offers eSIM rather than a physical SIM. Ask whether the plan includes a local voice/SMS number, whether identification is required and when the counter closes. In-person help can be valuable, especially for a longer stay. Buying after landing also means finding a seller or a reliable internet connection before you can install. Neither “airport” nor “local” proves that a plan is cheaper: compare the actual offer.

Airlines, booking services and phone settings

Some travel businesses sell or distribute eSIMs through connectivity partners. Lufthansa’s separate Breeze-powered eSIM store is a concrete example; do not assume every airline offer requires a flight booking or that every offer is sold independently. Read that offer’s terms and identify the support provider. Your phone’s “Add eSIM” menu is an installation route, not proof of an Apple or Google travel-data marketplace. Follow the instructions of the provider from whom you actually bought the plan.

Compare the full package, not just the price

  • Coverage: list every country and stopover where you want data. A regional label does not replace the included-country list.
  • Usable data: distinguish a total allowance from a daily allowance. For unlimited offers, read any high-speed, fair-use and hotspot conditions.
  • Time: check both the purchase/install deadline and the event that starts validity. Buying, installing and starting service can be separate steps.
  • Phone and services: check the exact device model, region and carrier lock. Decide whether you need ordinary calls/SMS or only internet for apps.
  • Total cost: use the same currency and trip length, including taxes shown at checkout, extra roaming days and any top-up you realistically expect.
  • Help and recovery: check contact channels, refund eligibility before activation and what happens if you change phones or delete the profile.

A real example: choosing data for a Switzerland trip

For a seven-day trip to Zurich and Lucerne, first check whether Switzerland is explicitly included in your existing plan. If it is not, decide how much data you need for maps, train tickets and messages. At the time of checking, eSIMfo’s Switzerland catalog listed 1 GB for 7 days at €1.70, 2 GB for 15 days at €2.25 and 3 GB for 30 days at €2.55. The longer validity does not oblige you to travel for a month.

DataValidityPrice checked
1 GB7 days€1.70
2 GB15 days€2.25
3 GB30 days€2.55

We opened the 3 GB product page: it listed Sunrise, data-only service, hotspot and top-up support, with 30 days from activation. It does not provide a Swiss voice/SMS number. A planning budget of 400 MB a day over seven days is about 2.8 GB, leaving little spare capacity in 3 GB; frequent video or laptop tethering calls for a different allowance. This is an example calculation, not a measured consumption promise. Prices and package terms can change.

Use the same checks for another country. For a multi-country journey, compare one regional plan with separate country plans, including how you will switch lines. For Switzerland route planning, our destination guide links transport and sightseeing needs to mobile data.

How to buy an eSIM online without missing a step

  1. Check device compatibility and carrier unlock before payment. If you need a local number, confirm that it is included.
  2. Select the destination and compare the package’s network, data, validity, hotspot and total checkout price.
  3. Complete the purchase through the official website or app. Keep the receipt and installation instructions accessible without mobile data.
  4. Install over reliable Wi-Fi at the time recommended by the provider. Check when the paid validity begins before enabling the plan.
  5. At your destination, select the travel eSIM for mobile data and follow its roaming instructions. Control roaming and automatic data switching on your home line separately; calls and SMS can have their own charges.

Questions before buying an eSIM

Where is the best place to buy an eSIM?

Choose by the service you need. An online provider suits advance preparation and destination comparison; a local operator can be useful for a local number or shop support. Your existing tariff may already include suitable data.

Is buying an eSIM cheaper than my carrier’s travel benefits?

Not automatically. Included roaming may cost nothing extra. Compare the cost of the data you actually need, any daily pass and likely top-ups for the whole trip, rather than comparing a starting price with a premium tariff.

Can I buy an eSIM after arriving at the airport?

Often you can buy online using available internet, or from a retailer that offers eSIM. Availability, opening hours and identification requirements vary. Preparing before departure reduces the number of things to arrange on arrival.

Can I buy from an airline without booking a flight?

It depends on the offer. Some are booking-linked benefits; others have a separate store, such as Lufthansa’s Breeze-powered service. Check the conditions of the specific offer instead of assuming a universal booking rule.

Can I buy an eSIM directly in iPhone settings?

The Add eSIM menu mainly installs or transfers a supported plan. Obtain the plan through your operator or provider and follow its instructions; an installation screen is not itself a price comparison marketplace.

Does buying an eSIM give me a phone number?

Only if the plan explicitly includes one. A data-only travel eSIM supplies internet for apps but does not create a local voice/SMS line. Keep access to the number used for verification codes if you need it.

Should I buy a local, regional or global eSIM?

Match the country list to your route. For one destination, compare local coverage; for several destinations, compare regional/global plans against separate purchases. A global label does not mean every territory is included.

Are two eSIMs identical if they use the same network?

No. The host network can be the same while allowances, speed restrictions, routing, hotspot, validity and support differ. Compare the full product conditions, not just the operator’s logo.
