It deserves a place on your shortlist if you want travel data from an established telecom brand, a dedicated app and a choice of fixed-data, unlimited or shared plans. The decision still depends on your route and usage: a 50 GB allowance for a long trip is a different purchase from three days of unlimited data. You do not need an existing Vodafone mobile contract, but you do need an unlocked, compatible device.

The Europe unlimited example displayed 5 GB of high-speed data per day, followed by continued service at up to 5 Mbps. Fixed-GB plans have a total allowance for the whole validity period. Do not read “20 GB / 30 days” as 20 GB every day.
For Portugal, the displayed 20 GB / 15-day plan was €14, just €2 above the 10 GB / 15-day plan at €12. That extra capacity can be useful for video calls or sharing photos, but an unused larger allowance has no value. For a route that also includes Spain or France, compare the Europe plan’s country list before choosing a Portugal-only package.

Does Vodafone eSIM work across Europe and in Portugal?
The Europe product listed 42 supported destinations at the time of checking, including Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Turkey. Its footprint is not the same thing as the European Union or Schengen Area. Check every stop, including a connection where you leave the airport; a country’s location on a map does not guarantee inclusion.
Vodafone Travel uses roaming partners. A familiar Vodafone logo does not mean you will always connect to a Vodafone-branded local network or receive identical speeds in every country. Coverage, congestion, device capabilities and your exact plan matter. The current terms also describe the service as travel roaming outside your country of residence; it is not a replacement for a domestic line at home.

What does “unlimited” mean, and can you use a hotspot?
On the Europe and Portugal pages checked, unlimited meant 5 GB of high-speed data each day, then speeds of up to 5 Mbps. That is continued connectivity, not unlimited full-speed data. Vodafone’s app listing confirms hotspot sharing. If you share with a laptop, operating-system updates and cloud backups can consume the faster daily allowance quickly. For a working day with large uploads, compare the exact allowance and usage conditions before choosing by the word “unlimited” alone.

Travel Together: five eSIMs sharing one data pool
Travel Together is different from turning one phone into a hotspot. The plan includes up to five eSIMs for people or devices, all drawing from one shared allowance. A 100 GB pool is 100 GB for the group, not 100 GB each. The plan owner pays and manages top-ups. Activation begins when one of the eSIMs connects to a supported network, so agree on the start date before someone travels ahead. How to install and activate Vodafone Travel eSIM
- Check the exact device model, market variant and carrier-unlock status before buying. An app being installable does not prove that the phone supports eSIM.

Can you keep your number, use WhatsApp and receive SMS?
Travel eSIM is data-only. WhatsApp and other internet-based services can use its data while retaining the number already registered in the app; it does not supply a new conventional voice/SMS number. Keep your home SIM active if you need verification texts, and check your home operator’s roaming charges for calls and texts. Avoid assuming that “keep your number” means free incoming or outgoing cellular calls.
What if it will not connect, or you need a refund?
First check the data line, roaming setting, supported destination, remaining allowance and APN. Try airplane mode briefly or restart the phone; do not delete the profile as your first troubleshooting step. Do I have to be a Vodafone customer to buy Travel eSIM?
No. Vodafone markets Travel eSIM to users of other mobile networks too. Your device must be compatible and unlocked; buying travel data does not move your existing phone number to Vodafone.
Is Vodafone eSIM the same as Vodafone Travel eSIM?
Not always. “Vodafone eSIM” can mean the digital version of a domestic Vodafone line. Travel eSIM is a separate prepaid travel-data product with its own destination lists, validity periods and support.
