An internet-connected car can help passengers work, use tablets and find the next stop. But an embedded SIM does not mean you can install any travel eSIM in the dashboard. Ubigi works through specific manufacturer integrations; the vehicle, equipment, software and country must qualify together.

Checked on 16 October 2026. This is an eSIMfo editorial guide based on official documentation, not a hands-on vehicle test. eSIMfo also sells travel connectivity. The cover is an illustrative image; the setup screenshots come from Ubigi's official BMW guide.

What is Ubigi, and how does it get into a car?

Ubigi is a brand of Transatel, part of the NTT group. Its automotive service combines mobile-network access with the manufacturer's vehicle and account systems. An owner activates a supported service through the car brand's app or portal instead of simply scanning a phone eSIM QR code.

The Toyota partnership announced in 2025 illustrates the model: the first deployment covered Brazil and Argentina, with vehicle connectivity and passenger Wi-Fi services. It is an integration project, not evidence that every Toyota worldwide accepts Ubigi.

Keep three functions separate: connectivity for vehicle services, a paid passenger Wi-Fi allowance, and internet shared from a phone. Buying one does not automatically unlock the others. Our broader connected-car guide introduces the category; the eligibility checks below should guide this Ubigi-specific purchase.

Which cars support Ubigi?

This table lists examples in official Ubigi material, not a universal compatibility certificate. MY means model year, which can differ from first registration. Confirm the VIN with the manufacturer before paying.

BrandDocumented examples or requirementsWhat to verify
BMWPersonal eSIM option 6PA; the help page names OS 8 and 8.5Link the actual vehicle in My BMW. The OS 9 wording still refers to a future rollout; verify availability in the app rather than treating that timetable as completed.
MINIPersonal eSIM 6PA and OS 9Ubigi says cars purchased from 5 March 2025 can activate directly; earlier purchases need the relevant software update. Confirm the vehicle in the MINI app.

For Jaguar and Land Rover, the distinction is substantial: the installation guide describes a SIM slot under the armrest. Its eligibility checker applies different model-year rules by purchase country. A new Range Rover and an older Range Rover must not be assumed to use the same service.

BMW Personal eSIM setup: the practical sequence

Use the official BMW setup guide while parked. Menu wording can vary with software and language.

  • Check first: add your vehicle in My BMW and look for Personal eSIM in Profile. Confirm 6PA equipment and an eligible residence country.
  • Select the service: choose your real country and the available provider route. The official illustration shows “Other providers”. Continue to Ubigi using the same email as your BMW account.
  • Choose a plan: check the current price, coverage, high-speed allowance and renewal terms before completing activation. Return to My BMW and finish linking your BMW ID.
  • Connect the car: sign in with that BMW ID in the vehicle. Open All apps → Personal Hotspot → Wi-Fi settings, enable internet access for mobile devices, then connect a passenger device.

The QR code offered when connecting a passenger's device to the hotspot is a Wi-Fi connection step. It is not permission to install an unrelated travel eSIM in the vehicle. Ubigi also notes that its subscription is tied to the first vehicle used with the service: check this before planning to share one subscription across several cars.

Coverage, costs and the meaning of unlimited

At the review date, the BMW plan description lists a Europe Unlimited offer with 60 GB of 4G/5G data per month, followed by reduced speed. It includes the EU's 27 countries, the UK, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. “Unlimited” therefore does not mean unlimited full-speed data, and Europe does not mean every European or nearby country.

Check the residence-country list separately from travel coverage. Turkey is not listed for this BMW signup route or in that Europe plan's country group. Driving from Germany through Austria to Turkey requires checking every transit country, particularly any non-EU sections.

The subscription guide describes monthly renewal and prepaid options. The current checkout is the right place for the applicable price, taxes and cancellation conditions; a price in an old launch announcement is not a reliable current quote. If you need data only for a holiday, include unused subscription months in the comparison.

Built-in car internet or a phone hotspot?

Your situationUsually the more practical starting point
Eligible car, regular passenger internet useCheck the integrated Ubigi offer: passengers connect to the vehicle's hotspot without relying on the driver's phone.
Rental car, several vehicles or a short holidayA compatible phone with a hotspot-enabled data plan is more portable. Check battery use, data allowance and tethering terms.
Route outside the car plan's countriesCompare destination-specific phone connectivity before departure; an in-car Europe plan does not automatically cover the next border.

For phone-based connectivity, browse eSIMfo travel plans and verify hotspot support for the particular package. This is an alternative for phones and passenger devices; we are not claiming eSIMfo plans can be installed directly into every vehicle. Download offline maps, limit automatic photo backups, and let passengers handle devices while the driver drives.

If activation or internet access fails

Work through the chain: eligible vehicle → correct account → active plan → supported country → hotspot internet setting. If Wi-Fi connects but pages do not load, check the data subscription and the separate internet-access switch. If Personal eSIM is missing, verify equipment and software before buying another package. Send the manufacturer or Ubigi the VIN privately through official support, not in a public comment.

Frequently asked questions

Does every BMW support Personal eSIM?

No. Check option 6PA, the operating system and the linked vehicle in My BMW. A BMW badge or a modern screen alone is insufficient.

Can I install any eSIM in a connected car?

No. The vehicle must support that provider's activation route. A travel eSIM designed for a phone is not automatically compatible with an embedded automotive system.

Does MINI use the same software requirement as BMW?

Not exactly. MINI's Ubigi help page specifies OS 9 and 6PA. Earlier eligible purchases may need an update; verify the MINI app rather than copying BMW's requirements.

Is Ubigi BMW data really unlimited?

The reviewed Europe plan allows 60 GB at 4G/5G speeds each month and then reduces speed. Read the current plan terms for your account before purchase.

Will the BMW Europe plan work in Turkey?

Turkey is absent from the reviewed plan's EU, UK, Switzerland and Liechtenstein grouping. Arrange separate coverage rather than assuming the word Europe includes Turkey.

Do all Jaguar and Land Rover systems use eSIM?

No. Ubigi documents physical-SIM installations for some eligible vehicles. Model year, purchase country and VIN determine the applicable setup.

Should I buy a car subscription for a rental?

First ask the rental company what is included and permitted. For a short trip, sharing a suitable phone data plan can avoid linking your personal account to an unfamiliar vehicle.
