USA eSIM with a Phone Number: Calls, SMS & Travel Tips
Need a US number for your trip? Compare data-only eSIMs with calls and SMS, see current package examples, and understand WhatsApp, bank codes and renewal.

A map gets you to your meeting point in Manhattan; a normal phone call reaches a relative who does not use WhatsApp. Those are different needs. Before buying a USA eSIM with a phone number, decide whether you need internet alone or also calls and SMS outside messaging apps.
The quick answer: a data-only eSIM runs maps, booking apps and WhatsApp over the internet. A voice-and-SMS plan adds a number and the calling or texting allowance stated in that package. Neither “eSIM” nor “+1” alone tells you which calls are included.
Prices and package conditions checked on 15 October 2026 by eSIMfo. This guide compares travel needs; your selected package's current details control its coverage and allowances.
Do you actually need a US phone number?
For a week of sightseeing, data may be enough if your travel group and accommodation communicate through apps. For family visits, work contacts or ordinary texts to US mobile numbers, a number can be useful. First check your existing carrier: if your home plan already includes suitable US roaming, you may not need another line.
| Your travel need | Data-only eSIM | eSIM with calls and SMS |
|---|---|---|
| Maps, tickets and booking messages | Uses mobile data | Uses mobile data |
| WhatsApp or FaceTime calls | Uses data, not mobile minutes | Uses data, not mobile minutes |
| Ordinary calls and texts | No included voice/SMS service | Only destinations and allowances listed in the plan |
| Bank verification codes | Keep the bank-registered line available | A new number does not replace the bank-registered number |
A US number is not a universal calling pass. Check calls to mobile, landline and toll-free numbers separately. Also check inbound calls, outbound calls and whether any of them consume your allowance. An attractive GB price does not answer those questions.

Three package examples for a short or longer visit
The eSIMfo USA page separates Data Only and Data + Voice + SMS. Here are three examples from the latter tab. Prices are a dated EUR snapshot, not a live quote; duration matters as much as the GB allowance.
| Data | Validity | Calls and SMS | Displayed price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 GB | 7 days | 50 minutes + 50 SMS | €7.75 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | 50 minutes + 50 SMS | €15.40 |
| 10 GB | 30 days | 100 minutes + 100 SMS | €23.90 |
For a 10-day stay, a 7-day bundle is not a complete solution unless you arrange a suitable extension. For a family visit of several weeks, compare the longer validity with your expected data use. For example, an assumed 300 MB a day over 10 days is about 3 GB; video, hotspot use and cloud backups can increase this substantially.
What the checked 5 GB / 7-day plan includes
Its product page lists a +1 number, 50 minutes, 50 SMS, T-Mobile and Verizon networks, hotspot support and top-ups. The detailed terms specify calls and texts to US mobile numbers, with no outbound international calls or SMS. Do not extend those terms to every package or assume hotel landlines and toll-free numbers are included.
The number is assigned after purchase. The stated validity starts when the eSIM is installed and first connects to the network. Read the activation instructions before installation, especially if you are already in the US.
Real travel situations: New York, Miami and family visits
In New York, share an exact entrance or pickup point rather than just a building name. In Miami, save your accommodation address and arrival instructions before leaving the airport. If your host only accepts calls to a fixed line, confirm that your chosen plan supports that number type; booking-app messaging or email can be a practical alternative.
For visiting relatives, agree on the contact method before arrival. A US mobile number helps when family members prefer ordinary calls or SMS. For calling home abroad, use internet calling or a separately verified international-call allowance. Keep offline maps and booking confirmations for moments without coverage.

What about T-Mobile or Verizon prepaid?
T-Mobile's prepaid eSIM options and Verizon's prepaid BYOD options are alternatives worth comparing. Check device eligibility, first-period cost, taxes, renewal and hotspot terms. A travel package using a carrier's network does not automatically inherit that carrier's retail plan benefits.
Our practical comparison rule: price the whole trip, then check the specific calls you will make. Avoid comparing a later autopay discount with another provider's upfront travel price as if they were the same offer.
Set up data and calls without mixing your lines
- Confirm that your exact phone model supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Keep installation instructions available on Wi-Fi.
- Label the lines clearly, for example “Home” and “USA”. Choose the travel eSIM for mobile data, and select the appropriate line for ordinary calls.
- Configure roaming as the travel provider instructs. Keep home-line data roaming off if you want to avoid that carrier's data charges; disabling automatic data switching helps keep the choice explicit.
- If you need bank codes, retain access to the number registered with your bank and check your home carrier's roaming and SMS conditions. A new +1 number is not a workaround for account verification.
- Keep your existing WhatsApp account unless you intentionally want to change its registered number. Its internet connection and registered phone number are separate things.

Keep the number for the rest of your trip
For the checked 5 GB / 7-day product, top up the same installed eSIM before expiry to extend validity and keep the number. Its top-up combines data, minutes and SMS; these are not sold separately for that product. After expiry, calling and SMS stop and retention of the expired number is not guaranteed. This is a travel plan, not a promise of a permanent US number.
USA eSIM with a number: frequently asked questions
Does every USA eSIM include a phone number?
No. Data-only plans provide internet access. Choose a package explicitly listing a number, calls and SMS if you need those services; check the number's country as well as the dialing prefix.
Can I make regular calls with an eSIM in the USA?
Yes, with a compatible voice plan and within its stated destinations. The 5 GB / 7-day example covers US mobile numbers, not outbound international calls. Confirm landline and toll-free support separately.
Can a US eSIM receive bank verification texts?
It is not guaranteed. Banks and short-code services may reject or not deliver to some numbers. Keep access to your bank-registered number and arrange a supported verification method before travel.
Can I keep WhatsApp on my usual number?
Yes, you can normally keep the existing account while using the travel eSIM for internet. You do not need to change WhatsApp's registered number merely to change the data connection.
Can I buy before flying and keep the number by topping up?
You can purchase ahead. Check activation timing before installing. For the verified example, top up the same installed eSIM before expiry to extend its validity and retain the number.
Does a +1 number mean the package works in Canada or Mexico?
No. A dialing prefix does not determine data coverage or included call destinations. The checked package covers the USA; a cross-border itinerary needs separately confirmed country coverage.
Ready to choose? Compare USA data-only and voice/SMS packages against your dates and contact needs. Buy the services you will use, rather than choosing a phone number simply because it appears in the package name.
