A Vanuatu holiday works best when you choose your islands before choosing your internet package. Port Vila makes an accessible first base; Santo adds beaches and freshwater pools; Tanna offers a very different volcanic landscape. A Vanuatu eSIM can keep maps, messages and bookings close at hand, but it cannot create a signal on every remote shoreline. Here is how to plan the journey and stay connected without turning the trip into a search for Wi-Fi.

Which Vanuatu islands should you visit?

Choose a base for the experiences you want, rather than trying to collect every island. Inter-island transport takes time, and a short flight still needs airport transfers and a buffer.

Island / baseWhat to build your days aroundPractical planning
Efate / Port VilaWaterfront, local markets, Blue Lagoon and coastal outingsA useful first stop for transfers and supplies; confirm that your chosen venues are operating.
Espiritu Santo / LuganvilleNanda and Matevulu blue holes, Champagne Beach, coastal staysArrange transport and entry fees in advance; carry cash for excursions.
TannaMount Yasur, local culture and a slower village stayBook onward transport with your host; volcano access depends on current official advice.

On Santo, give a blue-hole outing its own unhurried half day instead of treating it as a quick photo stop. On Tanna, a short distance on the map can mean a much longer road transfer. Ask before photographing people or entering customary land; a local guide helps turn a scenic stop into a more respectful visit.

A relaxed 7- or 10-day Vanuatu itinerary

For seven days, start with two nights on Efate, spend three on Santo or Tanna, then return to your departure island with a spare night before the international flight. This is our suggested pacing, not a published transport timetable. If your flights arrive directly in Santo, adapt the order rather than making an unnecessary detour to Port Vila.

With ten days, consider four nights on Efate, three on Santo and two flexible nights around transfers. To include Tanna as well, allow more time or shorten another stay deliberately. Check the current domestic schedule before paying for accommodation; avoid a remote-island flight connecting tightly to your journey home.

When to go and what to prepare

  • May–October is generally the cooler, drier season; November–April is warmer and wetter. Cyclones can affect transport during the wet season and occasionally outside it. Check VMGD forecasts close to departure.
  • Save accommodation addresses, transfer contacts, tickets and offline maps on your phone. Carry a charged power bank, a waterproof pouch and some vatu; cash access is limited on outer islands.
  • Check entry requirements for your passport with the relevant authorities. Before a volcano outing, check current alerts and follow the local guide's instructions. Confirm open attractions and hotel access in Port Vila, where reconstruction continues after the 2024 earthquake.

eSIM, local SIM or roaming in Vanuatu?

For a short trip, compare the convenience of pre-arranged data with what your existing mobile plan already includes. The most useful choice depends on your handset, route and need for a local phone number.

Which eSIMfo Vanuatu package fits your trip?

The current Vanuatu eSIM packages include five fixed-data sizes and several unlimited-duration options. Start with the length of the trip, then compare your likely usage. The examples below describe allowance and validity; the linked product page shows the current price in your selected currency.

DataValidityExample use
1 GB7 daysLight messaging and short map checks, with Wi-Fi for larger tasks
3 GB30 daysA reference point for the 7-day calculation below
5 GB30 daysMore room for photo uploads or sharing with a second device
10 GB30 daysMore frequent use; still monitor video and hotspot consumption

There is also a 2 GB / 15-day option. All current eSIMfo products support hotspot, including these Vanuatu packages. Shared devices use the same allowance. For unlimited plans, read the specific fair-use and speed conditions before buying. These are data packages, so they do not by themselves provide a local Vanuatu number. You can inspect the 3 GB / 30-day Vanuatu plan for a concrete example.

How much mobile data do you need?

Build a budget from your own phone's recent usage. As a planning example, 300 MB a day for messaging, maps and occasional browsing × 7 days is about 2.1 GB. A 3 GB plan leaves roughly 0.9 GB above that example. Add video calls, cloud photo backup, streaming or family hotspot use separately; they can change the result substantially. This is arithmetic for planning, not a promise that every traveler uses the same amount.

Set up before leaving your accommodation

  1. Check the exact phone model supports eSIM and is not carrier-locked before buying.
  2. Install using stable Wi-Fi while you still have time to get help. Installation and the start of validity are not always the same event: follow your package's activation instructions.
  3. On arrival, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and enable data roaming on that line if instructed. Keep data roaming off on your home SIM to avoid unintended data charges.
  4. Disable automatic mobile-data switching, test maps or a message, and save the eSIMfo help centre link. Keep the installed eSIM if you need troubleshooting; do not delete it as a first step.

Vanuatu eSIM: frequently asked questions

Does a Vanuatu eSIM work on Santo and Tanna?

It can connect where the package's local network has coverage. The checked eSIMfo plans use Digicel; signal quality varies by location. Confirm remote accommodation or excursion coverage with your host and keep an offline backup.

Can I keep my WhatsApp number?

Yes, changing the SIM used for mobile data does not require changing your existing WhatsApp number. Keep access to that number if the app later asks for verification. Data service does not add ordinary calls or SMS to your home plan.

Can I share the Vanuatu eSIM with my family?

Yes. Current eSIMfo packages support hotspot. Connect family devices to your phone's Wi-Fi hotspot; all their activity uses your package and increases battery use. Each person needs an independent connection if the group splits up.

Will it work on a cruise ship between islands?

A terrestrial eSIM is for places reached by its mobile network. It does not include ship satellite Wi-Fi or maritime roaming. Near a port you may receive land coverage; offshore, use the ship's service if needed and check its fees separately.

Does an Oceania or global eSIM automatically include Vanuatu?

No. Regional names are not coverage lists. Before buying any multi-country plan, verify that Vanuatu and every other stop are explicitly included, together with the validity and available networks.
