iPhone 18 Pro & iPhone Duo: Features, Prices and eSIM Guide

Searching for iPhone 18 and wondering which new model actually folds? Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo on 9 September 2026. The foldable phone is called iPhone Duo, not iPhone 18 Pro Fold. The names matter because their designs, release dates and SIM arrangements are different.

This guide brings the official product information together with the decisions that matter before a trip: which size to choose, whether your model has a SIM tray, how many eSIMs it supports and how to keep your usual number while using travel data. Information was checked on 25 September 2026; this is an independent guide, not a hands-on device review.

iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max or iPhone Duo: what is different?

Starting prices announced for the United States, not local quotes or currency conversions. Taxes, storage, market availability and retailer terms vary. Duo pre-orders begin 16 October; it is not yet on general sale as of this guide’s review date.

What is new on iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max?

The Pro models keep the familiar single-screen format and add a variable-aperture 48MP main camera, A20 Pro and an updated thermal system. Apple lists black, silver, glacier and burgundy finishes. The choice between Pro and Pro Max is therefore partly about how much screen you want to carry, not simply which name sounds more powerful.

For a traveller, compare the smaller Pro for pocket space and one-handed use with the larger Pro Max for viewing photos, maps and tickets. Those are practical selection criteria, not results from our own battery or camera testing. A better camera does not automatically require a bigger data plan: recording locally and uploading the recording are different activities.

Apple’s battery figures depend on model and test conditions, including regional SIM hardware. Likewise, Apple Intelligence and Siri features can depend on language and region. Check the local specification page rather than applying a US specification or feature list to every country.

What is the foldable iPhone Duo useful for?

Duo changes the shape of the phone rather than merely adding a larger screen. Its outer display handles quick interactions; opening it provides a larger workspace with Split View for supported app experiences. Touch ID is built into the side button. Apple describes it as eSIM-only worldwide, with no physical SIM tray.

A useful travel scenario is comparing accommodation details with an itinerary in a second app, or checking a reservation while messaging your travelling companion. Whether a particular app supports the layout must still be checked. The two screens do not create two separate cellular connections or double your included data.

Duo is the option to consider if that folding workspace solves a real need. Before choosing it over Pro Max, compare the foldable form, your preferred apps, total purchase cost and launch timing. We have not tested retail Duo hardware; the product details here come from Apple’s announcement and specifications.

Does iPhone 18 have a physical SIM slot?

For iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, the answer depends on where the device was sold. A model’s language setting or your travel destination does not change its SIM hardware. Apple’s US specification lists dual eSIM and no physical SIM support; Apple’s Türkiye specification lists nano-SIM plus eSIM and dual-eSIM support.

Duo is different: Apple announces an eSIM-only design worldwide. Do not confuse that hardware statement with a promise that every operator or every regional version follows identical activation rules. In particular, mainland-China versions have separate conditions. Check Settings → General → About for the model number, and match it to Apple’s regional documentation before buying an imported phone.

How many eSIMs can you use, and can they be from different carriers?

Apple’s US specifications list two active eSIMs and storage for eight or more profiles on these models. Stored profiles and active lines are different: saving several travel plans does not mean they all run at once. Mainland-China versions have their own two-profile limit, so the US storage figure is not universal.

To use different carriers, the iPhone needs to be unlocked. Apple explains how to check Carrier Lock in Settings → General → About; “No SIM restrictions” indicates an unlocked device. You can then use your usual line and a compatible travel-data line together, subject to their plan conditions. Choose which line supplies mobile data; Dual SIM does not combine two data allowances into one faster connection.

How does eSIMfo fit into the new iPhone?

Choose the phone for its hardware, then choose connectivity for where you are going. eSIMfo supplies travel eSIM packages, not iPhone devices. On a supported, unlocked regional model, select a destination package, check its network, validity, data amount and hotspot rules, then follow its installation instructions.

Hardware eSIM support and an active data package are separate requirements. For Duo, Apple’s announced eSIM support is the basis of this guide, not an eSIMfo field-test claim before retail availability. If your model or purchase region is unusual, ask support to check it before you buy a plan.

Compare roaming already included in your home tariff before paying for extra data. A travel eSIM can be useful for a destination outside that allowance, a separate data budget or keeping the home number available. A data-only package does not itself add a local phone number, normal calls or SMS.

How do you prepare the new iPhone for a trip?

1. Check the model, eSIM support and carrier lock. Update iOS and keep a reliable internet connection available for setup.
2. Before replacing the old phone, ask the provider whether an existing travel eSIM can be transferred or needs reissuing. Apple Quick Transfer and iPhone Handoff depend on carrier support; do not assume every QR code can be reused.
3. Install the destination package using its instructions. Confirm what starts the validity period; do not activate a short-duration plan prematurely. Mainland-China purchased models need the separate regional process.
4. Label the lines clearly. Select the travel eSIM for mobile data, disable automatic data switching and keep data roaming off on the home line. Enable roaming on the travel line if its provider requires it.
5. Test maps and messaging. Keep the main number available only under conditions you understand: calls and other home-line services can still incur charges. Save tickets and essential addresses offline.

Will the bigger screen use more travel data?

Screen size alone is not a data allowance calculation. What matters is the content you load, stream, upload or share. Split View might encourage using two online apps, but simply opening the phone does not double consumption. Recording a travel video locally is different from backing it up over mobile data.

As a planning example, 500 MB daily over ten days is about 5 GB. Add headroom for photo uploads, video calls or laptop hotspot and monitor your actual use. Download entertainment on Wi-Fi and control cloud-photo backups. Check whether hotspot is included in the particular package rather than assuming every eSIM has the same terms.
