Cape Verde eSIM & Travel Guide 2026: Choose Your Island
Plan a Cape Verde trip around Sal, Boa Vista or Santo Antão. Compare island routes, practical travel tips and eSIM data packages before you fly.

Cape Verde is a country of very different holidays. A week near Santa Maria on Sal is a beach break; a trip to Santo Antão revolves around valleys and walking trails. Choose that experience before choosing a hotel or a data package. This guide helps first-time visitors build a realistic itinerary, prepare for arrival and decide how to stay connected beyond the hotel Wi-Fi.

Which Cape Verde island should you choose?
For a first visit of about a week, one island is a sensible starting point. Adding another island means fitting transport around your holiday, rather than simply taking a short excursion. Look at the airport you will actually land at: Sal and Boa Vista are separate destinations, not neighbouring resort areas you can reach by taxi.
| Island or route | Best fit | Planning tip |
|---|---|---|
| Sal / Santa Maria | Beach days, restaurants and water sports | Use one base and leave space for a half-day island outing. |
| Boa Vista / Sal Rei | Wide beaches, dunes and a slower resort stay | Check hotel location and transfer arrangements before booking. |
| São Vicente + Santo Antão | Mindelo culture followed by walking country | Build the ferry connection into the itinerary and keep a buffer before flying home. |
| Santiago | Praia, markets and the history of Cidade Velha | Group sights geographically instead of trying to cross the island every day. |
Sal is the straightforward choice if beach time is the priority. Boa Vista suits travelers who want long stretches of sand and fewer changes of scene. For an active trip, consider São Vicente and Santo Antão as a separate holiday rather than squeezing them into a short Sal stay.

How can you spend 7 days without rushing?
On Sal, use the arrival day to settle in, find the beach access and save your accommodation address. Keep two or three days for Santa Maria, swimming when conditions allow and unhurried meals. Put Pedra de Lume and Buracona into an island outing with a local operator; check the actual stops and transport included before paying. Keep a spare day so wind, sea conditions or simple tiredness do not derail the plan.
For a walking-focused week, start from São Vicente, spend time in Mindelo and travel by ferry to Santo Antão. Choose accommodation around the walks you want to do, rather than assuming every trail starts beside your hotel. The Paul Valley provides a very different landscape from Sal’s dry coast. Confirm trail conditions locally, take water and save route details offline.
These are itinerary suggestions, not fixed tours. If you have only a few nights, staying on one island generally leaves more time to enjoy it. If you have ten or more days, check actual inter-island transport before committing to a second base.
What should you prepare before arrival?
Check the entry rules for your passport and the current traveler pre-registration process through EASE. Visa eligibility, pre-registration and the airport security charge are separate questions. If a tour operator handles part of this, ask exactly what is included and keep the confirmation on your phone and offline.
Book the airport transfer with the correct island, arrival time and accommodation address. Save a contact number that works outside email. Carry a payment backup for small purchases, transfers or a card terminal that is unavailable; ask about accepted payment methods when booking a local excursion.
For ferry travel, consult the official transport information and the operator’s latest timetable. Sea and weather conditions can change services. Avoid a tight same-day island connection before your international flight. Screenshot tickets, departure details and the contact for your next accommodation.

Does Cape Verde need a different internet plan?
Yes, check it separately. Cape Verde is not part of the EU/EEA roaming area, so an allowance described as European roaming should not be assumed to cover it. Before buying anything, check your own operator’s destination list and charges. Resort Wi-Fi can be useful indoors, but it does not solve navigation, transfers or messages once you leave the property.
| Option | When it can work well | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Travel eSIM | Maps, messages and bookings on a compatible phone | Data allowance, validity, supported network and hotspot terms. |
| Local SIM | A longer stay or a need for local calling services | Shop opening hours, registration and the actual voice/data offer. |
| Home-network roaming | Your existing plan already has a suitable allowance | Cape Verde inclusion, daily fees and data limits. |
| Hotel Wi-Fi | Downloads and backups while at your accommodation | Availability in your room and what you will use outside. |
eSIMfo’s Cape Verde country page lists UNITEL for the packages checked for this guide. They are data-only offers: internet messaging and app calls use data, but a local telephone number or standard voice/SMS allowance is not included. Network availability still depends on your island, location, terrain, building and device. Save maps before rural walks; an eSIM cannot create coverage where the network is absent.
Which Cape Verde eSIM packages fit a short trip?
Compare both the amount of data and the validity period. A larger allowance with only a few days of validity may be less useful than a smaller package covering your whole trip. These are examples displayed in EUR on 16 September 2026; the current country page and checkout take precedence.
| Data | Validity | Price checked |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days | €6.30 |
| 3 GB | 30 days | €14.10 |
| 5 GB | 30 days | €22.70 |
For light use, start by estimating navigation, messages and booking checks. As a planning example, 300 MB a day for 7 days is about 2.1 GB; add a margin if you share a hotspot or upload photos. Video calls, streaming and cloud backups can increase that total quickly. This is a calculation to help choose a package, not a promised usage level.

How do you set up mobile data before the trip?
Check the exact phone model supports eSIM and is unlocked for other networks. Install using a reliable internet connection and follow the package’s activation instructions; installation and the start of validity are not always the same event.
On arrival, select the travel eSIM for mobile data. Apply the roaming setting required by its instructions, while keeping data roaming off on your home line if you want to avoid home-network data charges. Turn off automatic mobile-data switching. Keep your original number for existing messaging accounts; ordinary calls or SMS on that line remain subject to your operator’s terms.
Test a map and a message before leaving the airport or hotel. If there is no data, check the selected data line, roaming/APN instructions and remaining validity. Do not delete the eSIM as a first troubleshooting step: reinstallation rules vary.

Cape Verde travel and eSIM questions
Is Cape Verde the same destination as Cabo Verde?
Yes. Cabo Verde is the country’s official name; Cape Verde is the name many English-speaking travelers use. Check the particular island and airport when booking.
Can one Cape Verde eSIM cover Sal and Boa Vista?
A country package is sold for Cape Verde, but service depends on its supported network’s coverage at each location. Confirm the package coverage and your planned islands before purchase.
Will an eSIM work during the ferry crossing?
Do not rely on a land-based mobile network offshore. Save the ticket and arrival details before boarding and use offline content during the crossing.
Should I choose Sal or Santo Antão for my first visit?
Choose Sal if a simple beach stay is your priority. Choose a São Vicente–Santo Antão itinerary if walking and mountain scenery are the main reason for the trip.
Can I use WhatsApp without a Cape Verde phone number?
You can keep an existing WhatsApp account and use the eSIM’s data connection. Data-only service does not include a new local number or ordinary voice/SMS calls.
